Larkmead were invited to play a part in the ATOM Science Festival this year.
ATOM is the official closing highlight event of the Oxfordshire Science Festival. It is a celebration of science and technology in Abingdon-on-Thames, bringing together many of the cutting-edge science and technology organisations in the region, with some of the sharpest minds in the country for an extravaganza of science entertainment and intrigue.
Larkmead held two events. The morning workshops, Printing Hearts, Saving Lives gave our students, along with students from D’Overbroeck’s College, Oxford Spires Academy and John Mason, the opportunity to attend a series of presentations run by leading heart surgeons, Professor Robin Choudhury and Professor Colin Baigent.
Steven Dey, of local company ThinkSee3D, then gave students an introduction to 3D printing and discussed how 3D printing could produce an artificial heart.
In the evening, the local community were invited to listen to Professor Steve Westaby explore how technology such as 3D printing is providing alternative solutions for medical professionals to help save lives.
Both events were very successful and we look forward to working with ATOM again next year.
